St. Phillips to Oro Valley and Marana then back So much for my mapping ability... Things started out
alright, one minor detour for a road closer, then I got lost in Marana (which is where Penny and I got married at the city
hall), I asked for directions and was pointed in the right direction and was also told that one of the roads on my route was
a dirt road. Not knowing exactly where I was and still feeling lost and not wanting short-cut my intended mileage--I
continued on my route. Sure enough, after winding my way up Silverbell my route took me to a 6 mile long dirt road.
It looked o.k. so I decided to try it. Soon enough the road turned to sand. My first wipe-out was trying to stop
and reach for my cell phone at the same time. The second crash was a slow motion left-to-right back-and-forth of my
front wheel while it sunk into sand. I whipped-out hard, skinned my elbow and bruised my hip. Luckily my bike
was ok because I was really out there in the middle of nowhere--and a little disconcerted about the warning signs to "be
alert" as I was in a smuggling area close to the border. Finally I got off the dirt road and made it to back to
pavement, only to find part of my route was closed for construction. Exhausted from pedaling in the sand at
low speeds, I changed the route and headed for home. Actual mileage 92.
