Oct 4th Route: Skyline to Snyder to Sahuarita One word for today's ride--"head wind!"
Things started-out ok, then on my long haul on Houghton from Snyder to Sahuarita not only did it seem like it was uphill
most of the way (it was!) but also the wind was trying to push me backwards. Most of the Houghton leg of the
journey was pedaled out of the saddle and if I tried to coast, it was like putting on the breaks and I would stop immediately.
I was crying and yelling "oh come on, give me a break" for much of the time! The saying "if god gives
you lemons--make lemonade" came to mind. This was what I had--so I better make the most of it. I made to
the fifty mile mark and had my sandwich and a coca cola (which is popular with the tour de france riders for it's caffeine
and sugar kick--which I figured I needed--bad! I turned west on Sahuarita only to find that the same wind was trying
to blow me sideways off the road now--which made this 11 mile leg all the more frustrating because it was down-hill but I
still had to fight to make headway. I crossed the road and rode on the shoulder against the flow of traffic, to try
and gain some shelter from the small bushes and trees along the shoulder, this helped, but only a little bit. Final
I made it to Old Nagales Hwy and headed north--this time with the wind at my back and I flew at 22+ miles an hour. I
was running late for an event with Penny, so I decide to cut the route short and meet her at her office. Definitely
the toughest day so far! Actual mileage 84.
